With a population of under 9,000, Frodsham is a small market town in Cheshire that dates back to the 13th century. The town is an attractive settlement built in the vicinity of the River Weaver, 3 miles south of Runcorn. It overlooks the Mersey estuary.
Frodsham’s genteel appeal stems from a successful industrial past as an important port during the Middle Ages. Its location made it perfect for exporting salt to Liverpool and cheese was also known to have been traded. At that time, the town was an important borough belonging to the Earls of Chester.
A small ship building yard was established in the 18th Century, with canals later being built off the River Weaver, eventually connecting Frodsham to the Manchester Ship Canal.
Today Frodsham is a lively town with a number of shops and contemporary eateries and a market held each Thursday. Frodsham is part of the Weaver Valley Regional Park.
